IN THE ERA OF DISTANCE HIGHER EDUCATION

Distance learning is developing rapidly and is transforming higher education. The new potential opened up by the Internet not only multiplies opportunities in higher education, but has also created a new class of students. Working people over 35 years old, with a Bachelor degree or not, take advantage of their free time to explore new horizons of knowledge and gain a second or third degree. Today, beside the road which young people have traditionally taken from school to work, a new pathway has opened up whose aim is knowledge itself.
In our country the main representative of the distance learning Institutions is the Hellenic Open University (HOU) (www.eap.gr). As its Chairman Mr Siafarikas said: 'The important point that makes the HOU unique, is that it does not take into account one's age, but only his desire for continuous education. According to our data 62% of our students are over 35. Among our students are also drug users and prisoners.' Looking at the the changes which distance learning education has brought about, Mr Siafarikas concludes: 'In a society where the need for time is always increasing, in a society where the need for education is always increasing, the Open University through the internet can offer the fulfillment of those needs. We are making our first steps, it is still too early to be able to realize the roads that the Open University has opened, however we are in a position to have a vision of our splendid future'.
Apart from the HOU, there are many foreign Colleges and Institutions represented in Greece who are moving in the same direction. Either completely through Internet or in association with the traditional way, they provide higher education to those who wish to have it. However, the opportunities have no national borders; the only limit is the art of searching, of 'surfing' and entering a web site in the browser. However, one must be able to distinguish the cunning ones who try to profiteer by offering false degrees in two weeks, or something similar. The Open University of Great Britain, Spain, Germany, the University of London, University of Cambridge, the MIT offer the degrees of Bachelor, Master and Doctorate through the Internet. Moreover, the students of the Open University of Great Britain in Greece are so many that have formed their own communities. As the time goes by, more top-ranking Universities open up their digital gates in order to provide knowledge and degrees for those who are willing to pay.
At the same time new players have appeared in the field of education, who can foresee the opportunities that the new technology creates along with the desire for knowledge. The web site www.philosophypathways.com undertakes to guide its almost 100 students yearly in the world of Philosophy, and to give them the possibility to get even a Bachelor degree. Its founder, Doctor of Philosophy Geoffrey Klempner, answering our question in Kathimerini.gr about his original inspiration for creating this School, said: 'Two personal experiences led me to found the school. The first one was reading of Jostein Gaarder's book Sophie's World, where a young girl starts receiving anonymous letters with lessons in philosophy. I thought then that this would be a wonderful idea. The second one was a British comedy, where a skinny young lad develops his muscles by following a training program sent to him by post, and in the end achieves his dream of participating in the Olympic Games. In my mind I drew the following parallel: philosophy is like gymnastics. One trains one's mind through reasoning and development of ideas. When I started Pathways, I had just finished my book Naive Metaphysics and I was searching for something interesting to do. I didn't want to go on teaching at University. These two experiences prompted me to do this.'
Dr Klempner, commenting the role of distance learning education and the contribution of Internet, claims: 'The most important matter, which has to be understood is that we live in the era of continuous education. This means that we learn all life long. Today's professions are much more demanding than in the past, since the conditions are changing rapidly. Even within a company the education of working people is continuous. However, apart from that people show interest in improving themselves as human beings through education. That leads them to broaden their horizons, and as a result they no longer identify themselves purely with their professional activities. This new attitude has become completely normal.
'Before the Internet, the only way that one could get distance lessons was through personal postal correspondence. The University of London had a very well organized distance learning programme by post, which started in 19th century. But there are restrictions to that method. Access to the Internet has brought about many changes. Now it is possible to attend a course of a College or University from everywhere in the world and to participate in it by email or online. The possibilities are unlimited.'
This last sentence breaks somehow with the prevalent view about the exam system all over Greece for entering university, and the 'one way street' they impose through the education of different levels, the tutorial prep schools and the negative emotions that accompany the whole procedure from studying to setting up. On the other hand, the role of the Internet in distance learning is similar to the root of its creation: the diffusion of information and the development of knowledge. Therefore this sentence has to be repeated, as it was said, so as to leave a warm sense behind in the reader's mind: 'The possibilities are unlimited.'
